Chapter 14: The Southwest Border area: Tricultural Development

San Diego: Border Issues

U.S. (San Diego)/ Mexico border

Although San Diego is seen primarily as a casual, beach city, its close proximity to the border of Mexico have brought many issues that similarly affect other border towns. Immigration and drug smuggling have become major concerns throughout the area. Unfortunately, San Diego recently was named among the top 8 most violent U.S. border cities. Tijuana, sitting directly on the Mexican side of the border, is one of the most violent cities in Mexico. San Diego has seen an increase in kidnappings and homicide rates due to the drug smuggling and human trafficking. Elaborate tunnels running under the border to run illegal drugs are being discovered more frequently by border patrol agents. With the cartels overpowering Mexican law enforcement, the violence will continue to escalate across the border.
