Chapter 9: The Changing South

Geographically speaking, San Diego can be considered a "Changing South". It has seen changes from Native American occupancy to Spanish colonists to the cultural melting pot it is today. The historic Old Town area, considered the "birthplace of California", is now surrounded on all sides by urban development.

San Diego has also witnessed changes to it's economy. While still considered a military town with the few bases that remain, it is no longer supported by the aeronautical and defense industries. Home to three major universities and specialized research centers, San Diego is a major contributor to the biotech industry.

San Diego is an up and coming player in the arts and culture scene. Museums, performing arts centers and theaters offer a wide opportunity for entertainment. Venues such as Copley Symphony Hall, The Casbah, and House of Blues provide music aficionados with professional as well as local talent. The world famous Comic Con is held in San Diego.
