Chapter 10: The Southern Coastlands: On The Subtropical Margin

San Diego's climate is similar to that of the Southern Coastlands. Mild winter temperatures and hot summers make it a popular tourist destination as well as a desirable location to live. Many of the crops grown along the Southern Coastlands are grown in the San Diego county area due to it's equivalent growing seasons. From several kinds of citrus to nuts and berries, the region has a surprisingly large crop variety. San Diego county also occupies the highest number of registered organic growers in the nation.

The many farms throughout the area employ thousands of migrant farm workers from nearby Mexico. Many workers live just south of the border and come across to the farms while others live around the county. Over the years, this practice has led to heated battles throughout the city between those who favor immigration enforcement and the workers who wish for reform.
