While San Diego city proper does not contain any agricultural areas, San Diego county is interspersed with mostly agricultural farms along with a few livestock and poultry. Approximately 87.46% of the farms are operated by families or individuals with the average farm size encompassing 78 acres. Although San Diego county farms rank within the top 20% of production nationally, the area ranks #1 in the nation for value of floricultural, nursery, greenhouse and sod products.

Technology has become a major influence in San Diego county agriculture. The introduction of GIS has led to more effective mapping of pesticide applications, quarantines, farm usage and inspections. Sophisticated field inspection data systems allow critical information to be quickly stored and easily accessed for increased productivity.
